Background of the Study
Mobile clinics have emerged as an innovative solution to overcome geographical and infrastructural barriers to healthcare access in regions with limited medical facilities. In Borno State, where insecurity and displacement further complicate healthcare delivery, mobile clinics serve as vital outreach platforms that bring essential health services directly to underserved communities (Abdullahi, 2023; Musa, 2024). These clinics provide a range of services, including primary healthcare, maternal and child health, and preventive screenings, thereby reducing the need for long and often dangerous travel to fixed health centers. Mobile clinics are particularly important in conflict-affected areas, where traditional healthcare infrastructure may be compromised or non-existent. By delivering services directly to the population, mobile clinics not only improve healthcare accessibility but also foster trust and continuity in care. The success of these programs, however, depends on factors such as resource allocation, logistical planning, and effective coordination with local authorities.
Statement of the Problem
In Borno State, persistent challenges in healthcare access are exacerbated by insecurity, displacement, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. Although mobile clinics have been deployed to mitigate these challenges, their coverage and effectiveness are uneven. Many communities still experience gaps in service delivery due to logistical issues, limited funding, and security constraints that restrict movement. The inconsistency in service provision results in delayed diagnoses, interrupted treatment, and overall poor health outcomes. Furthermore, the integration of mobile clinics with existing health systems remains suboptimal, which hinders the continuity of care and follow-up services. Without a systematic evaluation of mobile clinic operations, it is difficult for policymakers to identify best practices and areas requiring improvement. Addressing these issues is critical to ensuring that mobile clinics can serve as a reliable alternative to fixed health facilities, thereby improving healthcare access for vulnerable populations in Borno State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the coverage and effectiveness of mobile clinics in Borno State.
2. To identify operational challenges that affect mobile clinic service delivery.
3. To recommend strategies for optimizing mobile clinic integration and performance.
Research Questions
1. How effective are mobile clinics in improving healthcare access in Borno State?
2. What are the primary operational challenges faced by mobile clinics?
3. What measures can enhance the performance and integration of mobile clinics with local health systems?
Research Hypotheses
1. Mobile clinics significantly improve healthcare access in underserved areas of Borno State.
2. Logistical and security challenges negatively impact the effectiveness of mobile clinics.
3. Strengthening coordination with local health authorities will enhance mobile clinic service delivery.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study targets communities served by mobile clinics in Borno State. Data will be collected through program evaluations, interviews with healthcare providers, and beneficiary surveys. Limitations include potential security risks affecting data collection and variability in mobile clinic operations.
